Today's Tuesday Teacher is Mrs. Knizek! Mrs. Knizek teaches Spanish to 7th and 8th graders. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago & Northern Illinois University and has been a teacher for 24 years. In Illinois, she taught 1st and 2nd grade and taught an after school Spanish club for 1st grade thru 5th graders. She has been a middle school Spanish teacher since moving to Florida seven years ago. Additionally, she takes students on service/educational trips allowing them the opportunity to practice the language, explore a new culture, and complete service work as she did when she was a teen.

Why did you become a teacher?

When I was in high school, I spent every Summer in a different foreign country over the Summer doing service work with Amigos de las Americas. While there, I administered immunizations to the underprivileged and visited schools providing dental care lessons and toothbrushes. It was the most humbling experience while at the same time I discovered my true passion and how much I truly loved working with children. Seeing the excitement in the eyes of children when they discover something new is rewarding.

What are your goals in teaching your students? What do you hope to achieve?

I am very passionate about what I teach and want my students to understand and love other languages and cultures. I want them to understand acceptance and diversity while also instilling compassion and a willingness to serve.

What was your favorite memory when you were in middle school?

My favorite memory was my Photography Teacher. He loved what he taught, and every day was hands-on with activities from taking pictures, developing film in a dark room, using an enlarger to print, and using special effects equipment for other photographs. My Science Teacher was also a gem. He would start each lesson with a riddle or joke and then move into our lesson/lab for the day. Everyone in his class felt welcome, and he attended every sports event at school with full out school spirit wear. He was hilarious and made Science fun.

If there was one thing you could tell your 13-year-old self, what would it be?

Keep being you and believe in yourself. You can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Give everything your ALL.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
