Today's Tuesday Teacher is Mr. Barnes, the Orchestra Teacher to the 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders. He is a graduate of USF with a B.S. Music Education and completed the M.M. Music Performance at FSU. Mr. Barnes has been teaching for 11 years, and this is his first year at Walker.

Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher because I had amazing orchestra teachers in middle and high school. They pushed me to explore music in many ways, including private lessons, youth orchestra, all state, and all county.

What are your goals in teaching your students? What do you hope to achieve?

My goals are always to provide a way for my students to apply all the amazing things they learn from their other core subject teachers, to give them a tool for expressing themselves through music, to encourage them to strive for excellence in all they do, and to provide a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all.

What was your favorite memory when you were in middle school?

My favorite memories from middle school were when the orchestra and chorus would go on field trips to perform at various events at malls, nursing homes, schools, and even theme parks.

What are a few fun facts about you that your students or co-workers might not know?

I used to have long hair!

I love star trek!
